1. DO YOUR RESEARCH!
Investment Bag: A handbag that serves a purpose for your lifestyle and increases in value overtime.
Educating yourself is the number one rule to any and everything, especially luxury handbags because they do come at a price most of the time. But there’s so many investment bags to choose from with different colors, styles, shapes, materials and price points. I recommend looking for an every day bag. Since this is your first investment bag I highly recommend sticking with the classics. The classics would be considered handbags that were made years ago but the style is still the same today. Classics are sought after because of the popularity, rarity, history, and they are made for the every day woman or man. These handbags can pretty much go with any outfit.
Example: CHANEL 2.55 BAG retails approximately for $5,900 new and as low as $1,700 preowned,
CHANEL CLASSIC FLAP BAG retails for up to $6,600 new or as low as $2,900 on consignment preowned. ( I recommend getting the Caviar rather than the patent Leather or lambskin. These materials can be very delicate if used every day),
LOUIS VUITTON SPEEDY BAG retails for $1,000-$1,060 New and as low as $350 on consignment preowned.
You can find pictures of these items on google or Pinterest. I will be doing a blog on a list of Classic bags, this is just the informative guide.
Chanel is a great example for an investment piece. Back in 2005 or 2006 their Flap Bag retailed for about $1,795. Today this bag can be purchased for as high as $6,600. If you were to hold onto this bag for more than 10 years or so, the retail value would skyrocket.
2. STICK WITH TRADITIONAL MATERIALS
Cowhide Leather is the most abundant and commonly used source of leather. Cowhide is dirt and water resistant and can be stored and taken care of very easily. I will create another blog post discussing different leathers. Cowhide is perfect for an everyday bag due to its durability.
3. Consignment SHOPPING
Some of my client selfies below :).
Buying items from consignment stores, online or brick and mortar, can be a cost efficient approach to finding your first investment piece. You’ll be able to find luxury bags that you’ve always dreamt about way under retail price. Every consignment shop is different so pricing will be different. But buying from a consignment shop can have its downsides.
ALWAYS BUY FROM A REPUTABLE CONSIGNOR: As a consignor myself I understand the importance of being honest with my clients and servicing them well. Any question that a new client of mine may have I’m always open to answer truthfully. If you’re buying from a consignor that you do not know, please ask them about authenticity, testimonials to dictate whether or not they are honest consignors, and how much experience that they’ve had in the consignment business. If they cannot answers these questions, be cautious about buying from them. Not all authentic preloved designer bags come with authenticity papers! I Authenticate all of my items & have never had a complaint about authenticity.
Always make sure that the sizing of any bag that you purchase is good for you. Some fashionistas love big bags, small bags, clutches, & crossbodies. Get familiar with handbags by going to luxury stores such as Prada, Chanel, Cartier, & Louis Vuitton to try them on. Do not be afraid of people judging you for walking into a store just to try on a bag and not purchasing it. Always remember that the point of this is that you’re gaining experience with luxury handbags. This is more than just a look, it’s a life changing experience!
This is also another important factor when determining what is going to be your first investment bag. Let’s set the record straight. An investment bag can be as low as $150. Some coach bags are even great investment pieces. It doesn’t have to be crazy expensive, even though many are. Never let different price points scare you no matter how big or small. Investments are simply what these bags can do for your life beneficially. Create an amount that you want to spend or search for handbags in different price ranges and pick which one is best for you.
